Redefining Success for 2019

Every new year brings with it opportunity for change. This year, I've decided to refocus my energy back into my coaching practise. So with that intention, I've done a lot of thinking about how I want to approach my business, so that it can grow exponentially and still remain aligned with my purpose and who I want to become.

As always, there's been a multitude of perspectives, opinions and research undertaken to that end. After much consideration, the following are the top ideas taking precedent to date:

Success doesn't start with money. It doesn't start by taking on a mountain and trying to move it in one go. I also don't believe it starts with any magical strategy or plan. I'm beginning to understand that it starts with some very small shifts in your mindset, your lifestyle, your habits and your awareness.

Small successes lead to big success over time. It's a practise that we begin to hone as we take the smallest of steps in the right direction, and we learn to applaud and appreciate ourselves for these small wins as we go. Most of us spend so much time beating ourselves up about where we think we should be; we seldom take the time to acknowledge ourselves for the work that we do accomplish or the things we have managed to achieve.

I've come to realize how much damage this does to our motivation and our drive. Why would anyone want to put more energy and effort into anything when they are constantly chastised for everything they aren't doing? It's ludicrous. It's dangerous. And it's not helpful at all.

Gratitude is a game-changer, but it has to begin with the self. The more we appreciate and be kind to ourselves, the more we can empathize and appreciate others. The more we begin to appreciate ourselves, the more we begin to uncover more of our own strengths and abilities. Once we stop causing ourselves pain we can begin to explore our own interests and gain confidence because we stop seeing problems and barriers and begin to see opportunities and potential instead.

Simplicity is the key to lasting positive change. The more simplified our lives become, the more joy and clarity we get to experience, and this begins to motivate us along the way. Removing excess from our lives allows us to not only free up time, money, energy, space and joy, but it also allows us to become more aware of ourselves and the people around us. This new awareness leads us to rekindle our relationships and deepen our connections with those that we care about most.

When I think about it, removing excess has a lot to do with my business and how I go about helping my clients achieve more of what they want in their lives. Removing disempowering beliefs helps us to gain clarity and perspective, and that in turn helps us to rediscover our authenticity and our joy. Removing destructive patterns and disempowering habits helps us to make new choices which in turn helps us to feel better and learn to meet our needs in ways that benefit ourselves and others. And removing old parts of our life story and blueprint that no longer serve us helps us to redefine ourselves and our purpose so that we can gain momentum towards creating a life that is rich and fulfilling.

This year, I intend to continually focus on taking small, purposeful but powerful steps. I intend to focus on the clients that I have and how I can help them achieve more of what they want in their lives. I'm going to stop comparing myself to where I want to be and instead compare myself with where I was the day or week or month before. I'm going to continue to purge my life of unnecessary and unhelpful things and keep building on the relationships and the success that I've been blessed enough to have been given. And I'm going to continue to assess my own thoughts, beliefs, story and habits to ensure they are serving myself and others in beneficial ways.

This year, success will be defined by how much I grow and by how much I leave behind. It will be measured by how I learned to treat myself and others and the impact that has on the present as well as moving forward into the future.
